The Renovation Wave: How is Belgium supporting its citizens to renovate?

It’s no secret that one of the charms of European cities lies in their historic buildings. However, many of these beautiful old structures fall short when it comes to energy efficiency. In fact, most were built at a time when insulation and energy conservation weren’t top priorities, and few options were available on the market. As a result, Europe is now facing a daunting challenge: how to upgrade its aging building stock to meet modern energy standards.

European buildings

Currently, the building renovation rate in Europe hovers at just 1% per year. Given the European Union’s ambitious climate goals, this rate is far too slow. To address this, the EU launched the Renovation Wave strategy, aimed at accelerating the pace of renovations across the continent. The goal is not only to improve energy efficiency but also to reduce emissions, lower energy bills, and enhance the quality of life for citizens.

What is the Renovation Wave?

The Renovation Wave is a key pillar of the European Green Deal, targeting the energy efficiency of buildings. Its ambition is to double the annual renovation rate in Europe and ensure that these renovations lead to significant energy savings and greener, more resilient buildings. By 2030, this initiative could improve the energy efficiency of 35 million buildings and create 160,000 green jobs.

What About Belgium?

Belgium is not immune to Europe’s low renovation rate and its impact on energy consumption. However, the Belgian government has introduced various initiatives aimed at boosting renovations and making homes more energy-efficient. Both Flanders and Brussels have specific programs designed to assist homeowners.

Flanders:

Mijn VerbouwPremie & Other Grants

Flanders offers a broad range of financial support through the Mijn VerbouwPremie and other grants. These schemes are available to homeowners of both houses and apartments and cover various renovation projects, including:

  • Structural improvements

  • Insulation (walls, roofs, floors)

  • Roof repairs

  • Window replacements

  • Renewable energy installations (solar panels, heat pumps, etc.)

The grant amount depends on your income and the type of work being done. This initiative aims to make energy-saving renovations more affordable and accessible. For more details, visit: Mijn VerbouwPremie.

Brussels:

Renolution Program

In Brussels, the Renolution program offers homeowners grants for renovations or energy-saving measures. The program provides 45 different types of grants, each tailored to specific types of work, building categories, and applicant incomes. However, note that the 2024 budget for these subsidies has already been exhausted. Homeowners can apply for new grants starting in January 2025. For more information, visit: Renolution Program.

Why Renovate Now?

Beyond immediate financial support, the long-term benefits of renovation are substantial:

  • Energy Savings: Proper insulation, efficient windows, and renewable energy systems can drastically reduce energy bills.

  • Increased Property Value: A well-renovated home enhances your living experience and boosts property market value.

  • Improved Quality of Life: A more comfortable, energy-efficient home translates to a healthier, more enjoyable living environment.

So, if you live in Flanders or Brussels, explore these options and don’t miss the chance to save money while upgrading your home. With government support, renovating your property is now more affordable—and ultimately, it’s an investment in both your home and the planet.
